The German city of Dortmund has reversed its decision to Award a British-Pakistani Writer a Literature Prize, because of her Support for Pro-Palestine Group, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. Kamila Shamsie was announced as the winner of the Nelly Sachs Prize, organized and funded by the city of Dortmund, on 10 September. The Prize is named after Jewish Poet and Noble Laureate. The Nelly Sachs Prize is a biennial award given to a writer whose work celebrates “tolerance, respect, and reconciliation”. However, The winners receive 15,000 euros ($16,500) in prize money.

However, Jury Believes that the Shamsie’s stance of Supporting BDS measures against the Israeli Government. So, she’s in Complete Contradiction to Statuary Objectives of Nelly Sachs Prize. The Organizers also passed a statement:

“Despite prior research, the members of the jury were not aware that the author has been participating in the boycott measures against the Israeli government for its Palestinian policies since 2014,” the statement read.

“Shamsie’s political positioning to actively participate in the cultural boycott as part of the BDS (Boycott Disinvestment Sanctions) campaign against the Israeli government. It is clearly in contradiction to the statutory objectives of the award and the spirit of the Nelly Sachs Prize.”

Response from Kamila Shamsie

Shamsie condemned the decision in her response saying, “It is a matter of outrage that the BDS movement that campaigns against the government of Israel for its acts of discrimination and brutality against Palestinians should be held up as something shameful and unjust.”

“It is a matter of great sadness to me that a jury should bow to pressure. They withdraw a prize from a writer who is exercising her freedom of conscience and freedom of expression,” she Tweeted.

What is BDS Movement

The BDS movement was launched in 2005 by Palestinians to generate International Pressure on Israel to respect Palestinian human rights. A Palestinian Activist Originated it to seek support for Imposition of Economic Sanctions on Israel to Stop Human Abuse on Palestinians.

However, the German Parliament has disapproved the BDS Movement in motion, condemning it as Anti-Semitic. The German Parliament accused BDS of employing “patterns and methods” used by Nazis during the Holocaust.

As a result, Many People came-out in Massive Support for Shamsie on Social Media and Criticize the Pietism of the Organizers.

However, Kamila Shamsie was among the 100 writers & intellectuals, who were the signatory of the open letter published in Guardian calling for the cultural boycott of Israel. So, She openly announced to refrain Publishing her Novels to any Israeli Publisher.
