Prime Minister Imran Khan Amicably Announced that with the help of Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, the matter of Karkey dispute has resolved that Hoarded Pakistan from 1.2-billion-dollar penalty levied by ICSID. It is undoubtedly a great relief for Pakistan.

What is Karkey Dispute?

Karkey Karadeniz Elektrik Uretin (KKEU) was one of 12 Rental Power Companies that had been Granted Indentures by the PPP Government. In the year 2008-09, these Companies were to ‘Resolve’ the Power Crisis, and the Contract itself became a Catastrophe for Pakistan.

By Digging Deep into the matter, it is known that a ship was Fetched to Karachi Port in April 2011. In order to make Available Electricity to the National Grid under the then Government’s RPP policy to overawed the Energy Predicament. Nevertheless, it Botched to Produce 231 Megawatts as was Required under the Agreement. Even though $9m had been Remunerated to the Company in Advance as Capacity Charges.

The Plant Generated only 30-55MW of electricity at a cost of Rs. 41 per unit, which was a Grave Cleft of Contract and Prosecution as well. It led to a 50 percent upsurge in the Reimbursement Claim by the Government ($80m to $120m)

However, some Legislators moved the Supreme court and asserted on convalescing the full $120 million from the Turkish firm.

Consequently, Karkey moved the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) in 2013. And claimed for compensation for the losses incurred by its pitchers in standings of impairment or mutilation for not being allowed to leave Karachi port for almost 16 months. The Turkish company later won the case in 2017.

Finally, THE LINGERING DISPUTE is resolved by the Constructive Efforts of Government officials and Pakistan is Free from the Heavy Fine.
